Humber Estuary Environmental Monitoring

In 2003 a new freight terminal was constructed to allow cargo vessels to access port facilities at North Killingholme on the Humber Estuary. The estuary is of international importance for a number of wintering shorebird species and to ensure that environmental issues were addressed CMACS has undertaken a full programme of monitoring.

The monitoring programme considers the impact of the new Humber Sea Terminal on current speed, direction and sediment loads; local intertidal sediment ecology, including invertebrate populations; saltmarsh topography and saltmarsh vegetation.

 

 

 

 

 

CMACS will continue this monitoring after construction is complete to ensure that our clients responsibilities towards environmental protection are met.

Description: Survey and monitoring of sediments, saltmarsh, intertidal invertebrate populations & shorebirds adjacent to a major new cargo terminal development.
Report Publications
Monthly visits to site are made throughout winter months (October to March) to count shorebird numbers. Quarterly sampling provides detailed data on water flows, sediment loads and shoreline topography while annual monitoring of invertebrate communities and saltmarsh extent and community composition ensures that all the key ecological features of the site are monitored.
